SWEDISH CRIME, NOT FOR THE FAINTHEARTED!

Swedes do a lot of things really well; meatballs, social welfare, recycling, ice hotels, blonde hair…but at the top of my list are crime novels! Yes, it has been an explosion of clever detectives in picturesque settings (mostly lovely little islands in the archipelago that hasn’t experienced crimes likes this ever and now there is a killing every month) solving the most horrific and tricky murder mysteries while battling the Swedish elements such as subzero temperatures, heatwaves and what not. But who cares, it’s riveting reading all the same.
I guess most of you have been utterly absorbed by the Stieg Larson trilogy that is still number one on booklists all over the world? And of course the old stalwart Wallander (by Henning Mankell) solving crimes while always seem to be struggling with insomnia and an unlucky love life.
Now, make way old fellas for here is a beautiful, young and fearless mother of two that is one of my absolute favourite authors in this genre. Her name is Camilla Lackberg and although I’ve been reading her books for some time, they are now available in English in your local bookstore. Her novels are set on the beautiful west coast of Sweden where I spent a fair bit of time holidaying with family and friends back in the days. The characters in the stories draw you in with their personal lives playing as big of a part as the actual crime solving. My advice is to read them in order of publishing with the first one being ‘The Ice Princess’.
If you can’t get hold of them locally just jump on fabulous Book Depository for quick and free deliveries to Australia. Can’t wait to hear what you think!
