"Organic" and "certified organic" get used almost interchangeably in baby clothes marketing, and the certification logos on the label are where the actual difference lives. Two of the certifications you will see most often on baby and kids clothing are GOTS and OEKO-TEX, and they are not measuring the same thing. Understanding the difference matters if you are choosing what touches your baby's skin, so here is a plain-English breakdown.
What GOTS actually certifies
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, and GOTS certification covers the full supply chain from farm to finished garment. That means the certification tracks the cotton from the field where it was grown as organic, through every processing, dyeing, and manufacturing step, all the way to the finished piece of clothing on the shelf. A GOTS label is not just confirming the raw fibre started out organic, it is confirming that organic status was maintained and verified at every stage in between, including restrictions on the chemicals used in dyeing and finishing.
What OEKO-TEX actually certifies
OEKO-TEX, most commonly seen as the STANDARD 100 label, works differently. OEKO-TEX tests the finished product itself for harmful substances, checking that the final garment does not contain chemical residues above set limits, regardless of whether the raw fibre was grown organically. A garment can carry OEKO-TEX certification without the cotton being organic at all, because OEKO-TEX is a safety and chemical-residue standard applied to the end product, not a farming or supply chain standard.
So which one matters more?
They are answering different questions. GOTS answers "was this grown and processed as organic cotton, verified at every step," while OEKO-TEX answers "is the finished garment free of harmful substances." A product can carry both, one, or neither. At Baby Goes Retro, our core range is GOTS-certified organic cotton, which is the more comprehensive of the two standards because it covers the growing and processing stages that OEKO-TEX does not address. Some of our other stocked pieces, particularly from Blade & Rose, carry OEKO-TEX certification instead.

Frequently asked questions
What does GOTS certified mean?
GOTS certified means the Global Organic Textile Standard has verified the garment's organic status across the full supply chain, from the cotton being grown organically through processing, dyeing and manufacturing, right up to the finished garment.
Is OEKO-TEX the same as organic?
No. OEKO-TEX tests the finished garment for harmful chemical residues but does not certify that the cotton was grown organically. A garment can be OEKO-TEX certified without being made from organic cotton.
Is Baby Goes Retro's range GOTS certified?
Our core range is GOTS-certified organic cotton, including pieces from DUNS Sweden, Frugi, Kite and Toby Tiger. Some other stocked pieces, such as certain Blade & Rose styles, carry OEKO-TEX certification instead.
Which certification is better for a baby's sensitive skin?
Both standards restrict harmful substances, but GOTS is the more comprehensive standard because it also verifies organic farming and processing practices across the whole supply chain, not just the finished product.
The short version
GOTS certification covers the full supply chain from farm to finished garment. OEKO-TEX certification tests the finished product for harmful substances. Baby Goes Retro's core range uses GOTS-certified organic cotton because it is the more comprehensive standard, and we are an Australian organic baby and toddler clothing store, ships Australia-wide from Victoria, with free shipping over $97 AUD.
